having finally woken from our deep winter slumber, team fancy human shuffle in through the door of 2016, in need of a shave and a coffee, clutching the newly minted test pressing of the first full release from london duo and co-founders lucatwana. the normally work shy combo deliver to you fh003, or under it s more catchier moniker, city droids. if they d have got it done quicker, we might have been able to cash in on the stars wars related hype, but never mind. anywho, city droids takes the form of three originals, beginning with the uplifting funk of city fucking, moving through the tougher and darker grind of droids on roids and ending with a nod to detroit with nobody knows. pleasingly, we also have a fancy human favourite tigerskin on remix duties, with a smooth, driving, hypno re-imaging of droids on roids that hits the nail firmly on the head.

janette jnett pitruzzello is considered something of a legend in her home city of melbourne, where she’s been djing for well over two decades. here, she delivers her debut solo ep, featuring a quartet of tracks co-produced by maurice fulton. the latter also delivers a solo mix of opener reflection, which adds a little leftfield disco sparkle and percussive sweatiness to an otherwise organ-heavy deep house groove. theres a similarly cheery, funky and disco-tinged feel to the rolling, cut-up house goodness of swangzipani. elsewhere, the duo gets a little stranger in pursuit of dancefloor thrills bubbles away is deliciously dark, wonky and intergalactic, while judge not wanders off into head-nodding, instrumental hip-hop territory.

ngly makes a return to l.i.e.s. following his highly lauded “speechless tape” ep from 2014. since then we have seen argentinian producer taking his live act around the world to much acclaim. luckily he s also been in the studio recording and finally delivering this new three track ep. here we get his signature dusty low slung sound full of basslines, creeper strings and driving drum programming. these are subtle yet effective funk-ridden club tools that are sure to move the floor and a precusor to even more from the in demand producer.

king ghazi is shadi khries and gilbert cohen. recorded in amman / may 2014. all the music presented here is original, and has been recorded in jordan in may 2014. this project was born when i met shadi in paris, at the percussion recording sessions for acid arab. from these sessions came the idea of&#8203,,,,,exploring local music styles on the verge of disappearing, in jordan and elsewhere in the middle east. it was also an opportunity for me to meet exceptional people and wonderful artists. for 15 days, we travelled through jordan, recording local musicians. here we hear osama al khairat aka abu sayah, an exiled syrian musician who plays the yarghoul (two flutes linked together by beeswax. one plays a drone, the other the corresponding range, all while blowing continuously). i want to specially thank shermine sawalha for allowing us to record in the living room of her parents house, as well as for coordinating the whole project. without her energy and patience, this record would not be in your hands today.

the hip house boom was in full effect, thanks to tyree coopers efforts, and trax responded with this double-header. power move is straight up hip hop, but its the flip, producer by trax regular lidell townsell, i ll make you dance that does the business here. kool rock steady, also known as edward rudolph, had serious credentials for an mc, being cousin of one africa bambaataa. this release is also notable for yet another misspelling of lidell townsell s christian name (lydell, since you ask).

qnete’s ep is not the question and not the answer. it’s in a hiatus between hopes and fears, still maintaining an eager energy. within a short period of time all tracks were recorded straight to tape, raw and improvised. they remember the sun bath before the storm, when you feel that something is about to roll over you. they express the urge and need to sometimes just jump into the cold water to face what’s coming next. they linger in the nervous energy when you’re lost and don’t know what to expect. but they also talk about the hope of finding a safe place.

modern love very rarely reaches out to artists outside of its immediate surroundings, it’s happened just a couple of times in the last 14 years. but there’s something about philippe hallais that compelled the label to ask him if he wanted to do something together. philippe has released music on a bunch of cool labels (l.i.e.s., the trilogy tapes, delsin, in paradisum), but hearing the first tracks recorded for lighthouse stories, it was obvious philippe was hitting on something new: a kinda weird slow/fast dance music that sounded like a footwork variant sewn up with an exotic production style that was impossible to pin down. these tracks eventually splintered off into different directions, held together by a strong sense of narrative and motion harking back to a teenage obsession with turntablism, detroit electro and ghetto house, and eventually juke and grime. although he’s spent the last few years focusing on more industrial dancefloor variants, for lighthouse stories philippe turned to these foundational influences, as well as his love of mixtapes and sound collages full of unfinished ideas, skits and experiments, all things that inform the flow of this new album. lighthouse stories captures a sense of nostalgia well, but is also a futuristic vision full of that exploratory, vibrant spirit that’s so hard to find in electronic music these days. frames of reference are hard, but in places it reminds us of the dusted swagger of anthony shake shakir, the acquatic drexciyan movements of ultradyne, a loose-limbed take on shangaan, and of actress at his most submerged. but ultimately, it’s an album made by a producer looking to his personal history while forging new ground, pushing ahead with little regard to convention and ultimately ending up with something completely unique: a kind of intimate journal rendered in bright colours and odd shapes.

in the past, berlin-based djane miss dica showed with her releases on third-ear-recordings and auftakt records her talent for modern electronic music . now, she opens a new chapter with her new label radio productions and proves that, besides groovy tech-sounds, she is also capable of more harmonic productions. in her first release „out of blue“ of her new label, melodic sequences melt together with analog sythesizers. together with her vocals it creates a new signature sound. as external support remixes from the two well-known artists rené bourgeois and lars wickinger complement this release. all in all it is a very colorful release in which everybody will find his favorite.

jäfar make a rapid return to the label and are back to grace the a side of fragil 019, while one half of the duo (elliot sindall) also pairs up with constantin nakov as seura on the flip. black mamba recalls certain aspects of jäfar s previous work on the label: the broken drum line, the subtle vocal samples and the global hypnotic aspect of the music. yet it is also radically different from marzsia. black mamba is a subtle but direct club track, aiming to get the dancers down through its heavy groove. the kick drum and low toms are strongly suggesting leg movement, joining forces with the snares and hats which call upon some serious head nodding.on the b side, white chapel is another broken beat club piece, but this time feels crafted for the afterhours. the groove is lighter and the heady feel is strong, closing the dancer s eyes and inviting them to drift through the music. once again, fragil comes up with original, well produced and highly danceable content, highlighting unsung talents for every versatile dj out there.

the uk s newly inaugurated future primitive label holds a candle to its name by unearthing two leo anibaldi productions from deep within the roman s voluminous back catalogue. the two-track 12- debut sees anibaldi provide the label with a contemporary stretched edit of 1994 production -fusion 1-, a cut lifted from the aeon ep originally released on the now defunct italian label, acv. future primitive has also given ambient number -evocation part ii- a full remaster and b-side privileges, honouring an esoteric production from anibaldi s void lp that was originally released on aphex twin s rephlex label in 1996.

following his uplifting 2015 single holdin on and its techy b-side faces, rony seikaly is back for another release on yoshitoshi that proves this renaissance man is a force to be reckoned with in modern house music. the two tracks on this ep possess deep grooves, but also flex a fair amount of melodic muscle. they liken back to the sound yoshitoshi became well known for in its infancy. the sword centers around some tribal percussion and carefully woven melodic ideas, but the track?s focus is decidedly on low end. a burly, assertive bass gives the mix a driving character suited for late nights. at time it feels like a modern take on progressive house from another era. all of a sudden is more or less an extension of the first track, giving the ep defined consistency. it s a delicately arranged and straightforward house feeler, the meat coming from a multitude of interlaced chords and melodies maneuvering carefully over more tribal percussion and a monstrous kick. the mission here is to inspire awe and wonder in dancers, and seikaly delivers on both accounts.

the highlife world series is a collaborative series of releases by uk-based brian d’souza aka auntie flo and esa williams. the first three parts are to be released in quick succession in early 2015, beginning with cuba, followed by kenya and finishing with uganda. each release features original songs produced in collaboration with local musicians. all proceeds from each release will be sent back to the respective countries in order to fund further musical production costs in years to come. we will also be seeking various ways to distribute the music in each country so the music is freely available for the musicians to use at home.

stuttgarts motor city drum ensemble (aka danillo plessow aka inverse cinematics),presents a superb ep of deep house taking its cues from berlin and detroit. 2008 was a great year for motor city drum ensemble releasing parts one and two of the highly acclaimed raw cuts series which featured heavily in many best of 2008 house music charts. he finished the year with an excellent resident advisor podcast and a set at the resident advisor christmas party. his ‘get slapped up’ release on compost black and ‘breath control’ release on his own four roses label have been in the boxes of taste maker djs and seen him become an in demand producer. danillo is also a part of the inverse cinematics production team who have released on pulver, fuid ounce showcasing his more jazzy, broken beat production style. this debut 2020 release features three superb tracks that take their inspiration from the likes of theo parrish and carl craig as well as the deep house sound of berlin, yet retain the signature mcde sound.

limited to 100 copies, chas burns has been producing house music since 96, originally with engineer simon vinyl junkie, and later andrew macari (filter flow). as well as producing under flow he also co-owns low pressings (with hernan cerbello), beat code, boxa records and more devotion (with ben racz). -put my shit on wax- first appeared on the shelves of record stores in 2004. it s release was boxa records (which is still going today) second release. the original press was of 600 and was out of stock very quickly. now you ll need to pay l50 for it on discogs, unless you snap up this highly limited repress (100 copies only - be quick!).
